TIGER MAPLE WOOD

Tiger, or flame, maple has an iridescent quality to the wood. The process whereby the wood acquires this "flame" pattern is not understood, and cannot be reliably reproduced. Perhaps it's the same thing that causes maple sap to be, eventually, the perfect complement for pancakes. Fortunately, the "flaming" does occur with some regularity in nature - or regular enough for me to be able to get my hands on the stuff. Unlike "rock" maple, tiger maple is somewhat softer - not in the same family as pine, but certainly not a good hard red oak. Therefore tiger maple pens should be handled carefully - bounding them off the edge of a desk most likely won't damage them - but then again, with the variations in wood grain, anything's possible.
